Coast path closed between Warsash and Swanwick after surface breaches

Hampshire County Council has closed a section of the coastal footpath that runs between Warsash and Swanwick. The temporary restriction covers part of Fareham Footpath 106, a stretch of the King Charles III England Coast Path.

The emergency notice took effect on 14 August 2026. It remains in force for 21 days or until the path is considered safe, whichever is sooner. The order was made under Section 14(2)b of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to prevent the likelihood of danger to the public.

Multiple breaches along the route have left the surface in an unstable condition. No alternative route has been provided. Regular users, including those walking dogs along the riverside, will need to choose other paths for the duration.

The footpath follows the bank of the River Hamble from Swanwick Shore Road southwards towards Passage Lane in Warsash. Official records of the definitive map note that the route has faced repeated problems from erosion and high tides for many years. Sections can become isolated when the bank fails, and access is sometimes limited by the tide even when the path is open.

This length of trail sits close to the Hook with Warsash Local Nature Reserve and offers clear views across the water towards Hamble-le-Rice. It forms one of the more direct coastal links in the area for those following the national trail around Southampton Water.
