Holly Hill Woodland Park

Holly Hill Woodland Park covers 35 hectares of varied terrain in south Hampshire, running from Barnes Lane in Sarisbury Green down to the River Hamble. Acquired by Fareham Borough Council in the mid-20th century, the site retains elements of its 19th-century origins as a private estate, including elaborate water features crafted with Pulhamite rockwork – a durable artificial stone used for dams, islands, and a distinctive fern grotto.

The park divides naturally into two contrasting sections. Winnards Copse presents a more structured landscape around a series of interconnected lakes, complete with waterfalls and ornamental plantings of exotic trees and shrubs from various continents. In contrast, Cawtes Copse preserves patches of ancient semi-natural woodland dominated by native species such as oak, hazel, and beech. This mix creates layered habitats that support a wide range of flora throughout the grounds.

The combination of restored Victorian landscaping and undisturbed natural areas gives the park a distinctive character.

Paths along the River Hamble provide open views across the water and opportunities to spot wading birds and other riverside wildlife. Higher up, shaded woodland trails wind past mature specimens and seasonal wildflowers. Resident wildfowl frequent the lakes, adding movement and sound to quieter corners. A dedicated pony track crosses part of the site, though it remains restricted to equestrians. Connections extend southward into Wendlehome Nature Reserve, leading walkers toward the Hamble shore.
