Hamble Classics Regatta Brings Vintage Yachts to the River

Classic yachts gathered on the River Hamble during the annual regatta

The Hamble Classics Regatta has settled into the late sailing season on the River Hamble as a steady, practical gathering of traditional and classic yachts. Jointly hosted by the Hamble River Sailing Club for race management and the Royal Air Force Yacht Club as the shore and social base, the weekend draws a mixed fleet that reflects the range of classic boats still active on the Solent.

Eligible vessels include wooden dayboats and racing designs of traditional style, GRP versions of classic classes, International Rule metre yachts, Spirit of Tradition modern classics, and gaff-rigged craft of all sizes.

The mix produces a varied starting line that rewards careful preparation and local knowledge rather than pure size or speed. Racing takes place in the central Solent, with the fleet leaving the river mid-morning and returning in the afternoon.

Spectators line the foreshore, quay and riverside paths to watch the boats depart and return. The sight of well-kept classic hulls and traditional rigs moving through the river mouth remains one of the clearer visual markers of the Hamble’s sailing heritage.

For anyone letting a holiday property nearby the weekend carries practical consequences. River and mooring traffic rises, waterfront pubs and cafés grow busier with crews and visitors, and parking near the foreshore and marina entrances tightens.

Guests booking that period often appreciate a short note about the extra activity so they can plan around it.

The regatta stays rooted in the clubs and boats already based on the river. It avoids the scale of larger Solent events and instead offers a focused late-season outing that keeps classic yachts racing and visible.

Details of eligibility, classes and entry are published each year on the Hamble Classics website. The event continues to give residents and visitors a straightforward view of the variety of traditional sailing still working on this stretch of water.
