Bursledon Windmill volunteers near equipment fundraising target

Volunteers maintaining Bursledon Windmill have raised £3,540 towards a £4,000 target for practical equipment and professional help. The GoFundMe appeal, organised by local resident Bex Longhurst, is closing in on the sum needed to replace worn tools and support grounds work at the Grade II* listed site.

The five-storey tower mill on Windmill Lane is Hampshire’s only surviving working windmill. Built in 1814 under the direction of Phoebe Langtry, it retains its original timber machinery and once ground flour for local farming and shipbuilding communities. After decline it was restored by the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust and reopened to visitors in 1991.

Public funding from Eastleigh Borough Council, Hampshire County Council and the Hampshire Cultural Trust was withdrawn, leading to closure at the end of March 2024. Visitor income alone could not sustain operations. Responsibility has returned to the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust, which is examining longer-term options including possible National Lottery Heritage Fund support.

A small volunteer team has kept the grounds and buildings from further deterioration. Longhurst, who has lived near the mill for more than twenty years, launched the appeal in April after finding basic kit in poor condition.

Volunteers had been using their own wheelbarrow, brushes and other tools that were reaching the end of their useful life. Modest initial targets were quickly exceeded, allowing the goal to rise to £4,000.

Funds will buy a heavy-duty wheelbarrow and other essentials, with remaining money directed towards professional tasks such as pigeon removal and internal cleaning. The mill currently stands without its sails, and work is also needed around the pond area.

An open day during National Mills Weekend in May gave residents a first chance to view the site since closure. The windmill remains closed for regular public visits while the Trust continues its review. Support can still be given through the active GoFundMe page. The campaign shows how local commitment is holding the landmark steady until a sustainable future is secured.
